BiographyAnna Vanesyan (maiden name Budaghyan) was born in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia. Music has been a way of life for three generations of her family. Anna has played the piano since the age of five, and graduated from the special school for gifted children with honor (silver medal). Afterwards, she entered the Komitas State Conservatory (one of the most prestigious Universities of USSR), where unlike the analogous institutions abroad, the students were taught thoroughly not only the subjects related to music, but also Social Sciences and Languages.
One of Confucius’ famous expressions, “Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life”, describes Anna’s Philosophy of life the best. Graduating from the Conservatory with honor (with Baccalaureate and then Master’s degree in Piano Performance, Accompaniment and Piano Teaching), she was given the opportunity to continue her education and complete the requirements for Post Graduate degree (aspirantura) in Piano Performance and graduated with Honors Diploma. During all years of her study, A. Vanesyan was honored to be in the piano class of leading professor of Conservatory Ketty Malkhasyan. Anna’s beloved professor graduated from Moscow Conservatory, class of legendary professor K. Igumnov, who was considered the founder of Moscow Piano Performance School.
Since 1993 Anna Vanesyan has launched a very successful career. She worked as a performer, accompanist and pedagogue at various teaching levels: music schools, college and as the assistant professor at Yerevan State Conservatory, developing her teaching skills and gaining valuable work experience. Music has been not only her vocation: it was her joy, her daily discovery, and her avocation. In 1998 Mrs. Vanesyan established the first musical department in Armenian schools, at Avan college, and became the head of it.
Having a genuine heartfelt desire and recognized need to update her knowledgebase in the field of education, Anna applied and was awarded with one of the most famed educational fellowships—the “Muskie/Freedom Support Act Graduate Fellowship Program”, in the area ofExecutive Development for Public Service, with the emphasis on Adult Education and Educational Administration. She was admitted to the Graduate Program at Ball State University (BSU), Muncie, IN, USA, and moved to begin her studies and personal journey. Anna benefited from a multitude of opportunities for research, collaboration, community partnerships, the experience and knowledge of the respected faculty of teacher-scholars.
During her studies in the US, she was regularly invited to the BSU School of Music to perform at festivals, accompany doctoral and graduate recitals, adjudicate various competitions and auditions. She was honored to perform a world premier of a piano reduction of Flute Concerto written by American composer Don Freund at the Festival of New music, organized at BSU in March 2004. In 2004 her article, “How Armenia sounds in the State of Indiana” about BSU School of Music, was published in “Scholars Forum” (the Journal of Open Society Institute). Anna was also invited to perform at the welcoming ceremony of Betsy Rogers, 2003 National Teacher of the Year.
After being back to Armenia in 2004, she was appointed as an Executive Director of American Graduates Association of Armenia, public organization with 105 members, all of whom hold graduate or higher degrees from the US top educational institutions.
Being granted the teaching fellowship of Academic Fellowship Program of Open Society Institute, New York, USA, she taught Public Relations and Arts Management courses in three state and private Armenian Universities: Eurasia International University, Yerevan State Conservatory and Yerevan State Institute of Theatre and Cinematography. Simultaneously, she continued her teaching at Yerevan State Conservatory, repeatedly performed as soloist, accompanist, and in the staff of various ensembles in Armenia, Russian and Georgia. She led the workshops about piano music of Barber and Copland in Armenia.
A. Vanesyan was often invited as the examinator/judge to different piano contests/festivals, including the entrance examinations and Piano Competitions at Yerevan Music Colleges, the “New names” Festival, and the piano competition named after G. Sarajian and A. Babajanian (famous Armenian pianists and pedagogues). Mrs. Vanesyan provided numerous master classes and presentations in Music Colleges and Music Schools in Yerevan and Armenian regions.
In 2005 Anna Vanesyan was awarded the nomination of “International Professional of the Year” by the International Biographical Centre, Cambridge, England.
In 2006 Anna started Doctoral program in Piano Performance at BSU School of Music with Piano Chamber Music/Accompanying as the secondary emphasis. She was studying with well-known music professors Dr. James Helton (piano performance) and Dr. Lory Rhoden (piano pedagogy), and working in the studio of a distinguished percussion professor Dr. E. Mueller, as an accompanist.
In the period of January-June of 2007, Anna performed more than 30 solo and collaborative recitals in Sursa, Choral and Pruis Performance Halls in Muncie, IN, USA. She was involved in regional and Indiana NATS competition, as well as BSU auditions for entrance and scholarships (graduate and undergraduate). As the assistant of professor at BSU, Anna was teaching group piano classes and private piano to graduate and undergraduate students, as well as to beginners - elementary school students and adults.
The latest in Anna’s career was the concert dedicated to the music of Armenian famous composer Alexander Arutunian, where she performed the composer’s piano solo and chamber music pieces in collaboration with BSU professors J. Helton, E. Mueller, S. Rice and M. Hagopian. Professional CD and DVD were recorded during this concert.
During the last five years, Anna completed extensive work as the literature editor of many publications about distinguished Armenian musicians. As of now, four publications — three monographs and one book, were published.
Currently, Anna Vanesyan is an affiliate at the Young Artists Performance Academy at the Glenn Gould School (The Royal Conservatory of Music) and running a very busy studio in Toronto, Canada. She is also actively involved in vocal and instrumental accompanying.

“I offer my strongest endorsement on behalf of Anna Vanesyan for her work as a musician, teacher and scholar. As a performer, Anna’s playing is imbued with warmth and sensitivity, and her technical command is most solid.
Mrs. Vanesyan’s accompanying repertoire covers most instruments and voice; Ball State instructors are unanimous in their praise of her work. When Anna gave a recital, featuring the music of A. Arutunian, virtually all of her collaborators were enthusiastic faculty members, rather than fellow graduate students.
During this past year as a doctoral student as Ball State University, Anna has been a strong asset as a teacher. As part of her graduate assistantship duties, she taught several group piano classes and several private students. Group piano classes at Ball State are taught in an electronic keyboard lab, and usually have an enrollment of 12-16. Teachers of these classes are adept at using not only the electronic keyboards, controller, and electronic visualizer, but they also use PowerPoint software and various other electronic tutorial.
Anna is warm, gentle person, a quick intellect, and a passionate and sensitive musician. I regret to see her leave Ball State University.”
“Anna is an excellent sight reader and knows the different styles of the various composers. She knows how to follow and how to lead the singers. The students enjoy performing with her. She was in great demand at Ball State University as an accompanist for strings, percussion, brass and woodwinds in recital and auditions.”
Mary Hagopian
Associate Professor (Retired from Ball State University, Muncie, IN, USA)
“I came to know Mrs. Vanesyan as an outstanding pianist and accompanist. As a collaborator, she has the ability to provide a framework for a composition whether it is with a student or other professional musicians. Her ability to sight read difficult scores is truly amazing. She is a consummate musician.
Anna Vanesyan’s patience, dedication and artistry in working with those whom she accompanied enabled them to perform at their highest level.
For her final recital, which focused on the music of Armenian composer A. Arutunian, she collaborate with various faculty that included a pianist, a French horn player, a vocalist and percussionists, which produced a stunning musical event for which she received a standing ovation.”
Dr. Erwin Mueller
Professor of Music, Ball State University, Muncie, IN, USA
“As a teacher in both the piano pedagogy classes and the group piano program, I have seen Anna grow significantly in her teaching skills. Already a very experienced teacher when she came here, she willingly embraced many new concepts and methods, working hard to incorporate them into her teaching. I had the opportunity to observe her teaching of both elementary and intermediate-level students. Her students had a great rapport with her, and made appropriate during the time they studied with her. Despite the fact that English is not her native language, she consistently gave high quality pedagogical presentations in my classes.
I have every confidence that Anna will have a bright and successful future in whatever she does…”
Lori Rhoden, D.M.A., N.C.T.M.
Immediate Past President
Indiana Music Teachers Association
Coordinator of Piano Pedagogy and Group Piano
Associate Professor of Music Performance - Piano
School of Music, Ball State University, Muncie, IN, USA
“Completing the MA Program with a major in Executive Development was a new and exiting challenge for Anna. She completed a wide variety of different courses in management, marketing, administration, Public relations, organizational and interpersonal communication, adult and community education and grant writing and research.
As my graduate assistant, Mrs. Vanesyan helped with extensive library research for the latest studies on Continuing Professional Education and adult learning…
It has been my honor with privilege to work with Mrs. Vanesyan during 2002-2004.”
Dr. Peter Murk
Professor in Adult & Community Education
Ball State University, Muncie, IN, USA
“Anna is a true scholar, humanitarian, and outstanding ambassador for her home country, Armenia. We, at Ball State University have been honored to count her among our May 2004 graduates, having earned master’s degree with distinction based on exceptionally high GPA, public services and commitment to superior program completion. And, in my case since I teach the public relations courses for school administrators, Anna is consummate professional in public relations.
Her ability is unlimited, her potential tremendous, and her contributions grow daily.”
Dr. Terry Wiedmer
Professor, Educational Leadership department,
Ball State University, Muncie, IN, USA
“Anna demonstrated her talents, plans, and desire to contribute to leading her academic and cultural communities to higher levels of achievement and expanded opportunities. Anna is a natural leader and one who quickly determines the assets of any given situation and maximizes the impact of her efforts whether they are written, spoken or performed.
We, at academic Fellowship program of Open Society Institute have been honored to count her among our 40 current fellows throughout Eurasia.”
Anna Harutyunyan,
OSI/AFP Armenia coordinator
“I have had privilege to know A. Vanesyan for a long time since her student years as a pianist of the exceptional musical gifts. She graduated form the Conservatory with honor in 1991, and then completed her postgraduate studies in 1994 under the guidance of the leading pianist of Armenia professor Ketty Malkhasyan.
During the last decade Ms. Vanesyan has been one of the respected young members of the faculty of the Komitas State Conservatory. She has a special skill of helping her students connect with music. She is perfectly suited to teach and inspire young people in any classroom setting. Her first graduate student continued her education at the postgraduate level.
Mrs. Vanesyan has earned great respect not only for her work as a teacher, but also as a soloist, concertmaster and chamber musician. Also, I would like to mention her great work done in capacity of editor of books about Armenian distinguished musicians.”
Sergei Sarajyan
Professor, Rector of the Komitas State Conservatory, Yerevan, Armenia
“As the Executive Director of a big organization, that unites around 105 alumni of American universities, Mrs. Vanesyan has always demonstrated her breadth of understanding, experience, expertise, and commitment to contribute to the success of the American Graduates Association. The Alumni Resource Center, administered by her, has had more than 1500 visitors since spring of 2005, and has served a venue for many important gatherings; all of those could not have been possible without Anna Vanesyan’s coordination talent, professionalism, her devotion to the task, and ability to work under pressure, the qualities most needed for today’s working environment.”

We, at Ball State University have been honored to count her among our May 2004 graduates, having earned master’s degree with distinction based on exceptionally high GPA, public services and commitment to superior program completion. And, in my case since I teach the public relations courses for school administrators, Anna is consummate professional in public relations.
